We were very lucky to have Kelsey, a work experience student with us this week, the children took to her straight away and she was so helpful to the staff and brilliant with the children – especially as it was such a busy week, with lots of activities going on.. the Wychwood School teacher visit and other visitors too! Kelsey certainly did Burford School proud! We looked more closely at two books this week. What’s in the Witch’s Kitchen is a rhyming book with two way flaps – there were lots of Urghs and Mmmms as the children made choices between things such as Strawberry Tea or Goblin’s Wee and Lollipops or Rabbit Plops!! We made Witch Soup in a big cauldron using wriggly worms (beansprouts), sliced snails (green beans), mouldy maggots (rice), butterfly wings (mushrooms) & borlotti beans (woodlice). There was lots of activity in the mud kitchen in the back garden with many new utensils to mix up mud pies and potions. We also squelched cooked spaghetti and spiders together before chopping it all up with scissors! ‘Mouse Paint’ is a gentler book about three white mice on a white piece of paper who hide from a cat, they jump into red, yellow and blue paint pots and explore colour mixing to make orange, green and purple. We thought we would take the opportunity to include a cupcake into our planning(!) and so the children were able to explore mixing coloured icings to decorate their cakes – all the children loved this activity, we did it in very small groups and read the story alongside doing the activity. Later next week we hope to take delivery of our new Pre-School pet guinea pigs – great excitement!!
