Our Space topic started with a cardboard box rocket and space station attachment with lots of pulleys, dials, silver foil and star lights – the children enjoyed painting the rocket themselves with white and silver paint, even decorating the inside! The children made ‘gadgets’ out of small boxes with silver foil and ribbon with discs as switches. During the course of the week we have had lots of Space themed activities; one of the children’s favourites was a paper plate porthole which they painted black and embellished with lots of glitter, stars and planets. The porthole was covered in silver foil – we hope that they are hung up at home in pride of place, as the children were all very proud of their efforts. There are a couple of children that need to do these next week, if they would like.
We have danced to space music and learned two new action songs about launching rockets and we have lost count of the amount of times that we have counted down from 10 to blast-off! We have all created a new number board and the children came up with good ideas for decorating planets for the board – it looks fab, so please do take a look. We have threaded popcorn and played with raspberry jelly in the tuff spot with Octonauts and space rockets. We also had red playdough that smelt of raspberry too. Some children made up their own stories about space which included a beginning, middle and end of the story – we are lucky to have such imaginative storytellers amongst us! Thursday and Friday this week has been rocket-launching days – the children blew their own rocket through a straw – we took the opportunity to do some maths and measuring with them and the children proudly wore a sticker to say how far their individual rocket had travelled. Not forgetting that we also made Moon Rock Cakes which each child brought home in a plastic cup rocket that they made themselves and lots of Space/rocket/astronaut stories have been read. Goodness, what a busy week! Next week our Space theme continues, as always we would welcome any items for show and tell. Many thanks for your continued support.
