This week we put on our lab coats and goggles and started some experiments. We saw colour mixing – watching the blue and yellow water travel along the kitchen towel to meet in the middle as green. We also saw a reaction with food colour in milk and added a drop of washing up liquid and watch the colours “dance” (using a pipette – we love all the lab talk!)
Over a few days we saw the reaction of eggs submerged in vinegar – the shell is completely dissolved and we were left with a “Jelly egg” – we held it up to the light and could see the yolk.
We created a volcano using bicarbonate of soda and vinegar and caused raucous giggling as it erupted 6 ft in the air – raining vinegar all over Janet and Sharon. “Do it again ” they all shouted! “Wow that’s awesome!!”
We also made a “lava lamp” using oil and coloured water. Once settled the children were fascinated by the two levels “the water is at the bottom”. We then added a salt tablet and as it dissolves the coloured bubbles rise through the oil to give a lava lamp impression.
