Babies and toddlers learn and begin to make sense of the world through mark making. It is the beginning of learning to write and is an important development for handwriting, creativity and coordination. It will start off in a haphazard way but as the children develop they learn that they can control their marks and their creativity starts to thrive. Here at Pre-School children have many different opportunities to mark make, some might like to use their fingers or paintbrushes in sand, dough or paint, others prefer the sensation of a whiteboard marker gliding across a whiteboard or we often use the large glass arched doors for this too. Shaving foam is another great favourite as well as our new lightboards with different coloured lights, we use chalk pens on these. Mark making is not just for indoors there are lots of mark making opportunities outside too, big brushes and rollers dipped in water and painted on the walls of the hall or pavement outside. A mud mixture in the mud kitchen splattered and painted on the walls. A stick dragged through mud is a good mark making implement when out and about in the village or at our Forest School sessions. There are lots of different ways to mark make. Do give it a go at home, it’s great fun! There is a new photo gallery here on our website if you would like to take a look visit
