Incubating & hatching eggs

In the past we have found that this is an excellent hands-on experience for the children. Taking care of an egg all the way through to hatching and the early life of the chick is a wonderful way to learn important life skills and natural science. Of course, it is also lots of fun! We now have our own incubator with 12 eggs inside. The children have seen the eggs and noticed the different colours of the shells. We have a chat every day and the staff have explained that it takes 21 days for the chicks to hatch. The chick pecks a little hole from inside the egg shell with it’s ‘egg tooth’ the chick will be wet when it’s hatched but soon fluffs up in the hot air of the incubator. As the weeks go by we will explain more and it’s amazing what the children pick-up and remember. Do ask them all about it.
