We started the week with the story of Jasper’s Beanstalk where Jasper the cat decides to plant a bean on the Monday and by the end of the week when it hasn’t grown after all the care and attention he has given it, decides to dig it up again. Eventually after a long time it grows into a beanstalk. We followed this with the well-known story of Jack and the Beanstalk. The children joined in with repeated refrains and we thought about whether or not Jack was right to steal from the giant. We also read The Tiny Seed and other books about growing and also Jim and The Beanstalk at the end of the week. Everyone enjoyed this variation of the original story. The children dug for magic beans in compost, made their own beanstalks, used pictures to recreate the stories as well as planting. They planted potatoes, vegetables and flowers and also made their very own Mr Grasshead – whose will grow hair first?
