As parents, carers, siblings and other family and friends gathered for the grand event that is the annual Pre School Christmas Concert amidst smells of mulled wine and minced pies, the children were carefully magicked away “upstairs”.
The children were a delight. They all knew exactly what they needed to do – from displays of dancing ballerinas, elves, santas and reindeer – they all performed their parts magnificently.
The X Factor at this age remains the fact that you never quite know how the children will perform on the night. The little “mistakes” or ad libs from the children – from one Santa not wanting to share his chimney, to children adding extra verses of songs or deciding to explore the set or engage with family members in the audience whilst on stage – all add to provoke tears (mainly of laughter) to teachers and audience alike.
As these 2, 3 and 4 year olds demonstrated, it’s not about perfection at this age but it is about doing something together, having their special moment and creating memories for both the older and younger generations. I am always reminded how capable the children are even at this young age, how much the older brothers and sisters enjoy supporting their younger siblings and how much the children themselves enjoy the experience.
I still remember my school nativities – happy memories from far too many years ago!
Thanks to all those who worked hard to make it a lovely festive experience and although with some sadness it is my final preschool Christmas concert, it has to be one of my favourites.
