Shapes, numbers, size, position it’s everywhere around us. And this week we enjoyed activities inside and out to stimulate the children’s curiosity and confidence about both their mathematical knowledge and language.
Using a variety of our resources in order to appeal to all the children they explored counting and combining groups of objects, shapes of everyday objects, flat and solid or 3D shapes, guessing and estimating how many.
We had a washing line with a pile of pants, jewels in purses and bags, numbers on cars zooming down guttering, and blocks and dinosaurs to stimulate counting, using number names in play and recognising numerals.
We explored the properties of simple flat shapes, finding shapes in everyday objects, matching and naming them and placing them in position. Some of the older children went on to explore shapes with 3 dimensions and using flat shapes, made a cylinder.
There are lots of opportunities to make learning about shape and number fun at home… making patterns with cutlery – spoon, fork, spoon, fork etc., find shapes on buildings, spot numbers on registration plates, count steps and stairs together… the possibilities are endless.
