Welcome back to pre-school, what a lovely time we all had during the Easter break.
This week the children have made dragon masks and built a variety of machines including inspiration from one of our books, a dragon machine making use of some big boxes, tubes and packing tape.
We have been writing in dragon’s blood, and trying to work out what dragons like to eat. Some of the children had a go making up their own stories with a beginning, middle and end and lots of lovely detail; we have explored the instruments and made up rhythms for each other to copy; as well as making shape dragons.
We have been very fortunate to have a visit from a bearded dragon this week, brought in by Sammy’s Daddy. Some of the children had the opportunity to touch and stroke the dragon and ask any questions. The dragon was really well behaved, and the children were very calm and quiet around it, allowing them to get a very good inspection of it – we learnt that dragon’s ears are small holes, they don’t have sticky out ears like other animals.
For snack this week we have tried painted toast. A great activity for you to do at home, especially for reluctant mark-makers as it’s something a bit unusual. The paint is in fact a little milk with food colouring; as the bread is now a little soggy it will take a little longer to toast – so patience is the by-word!
Wednesday was St George’s Day and whilst some went off to Forest School the rest of us made badges to celebrate the day and enjoyed a story of George and the Dragon. A number of the children came dressed as knights, princesses and dragons; it really made for a special day.
The children moving on to school in September have started working on phonic initial sound books, helping to reinforce their identification of phonics. We follow the Jolly Phonics scheme, if you don’t already have any materials at home you may like to consider purchasing a copy of the Jolly Phonics CD (available from various retailers including Amazon, WHSmith…).
